The Science Mill Homeschool Days give students and their adults a chance to explore a STEM field in greater depth through activity stations, exposure to STEM careers, and age-based Learning Labs for ages 5-17 led by Science Mill educators. (Plus, explore all the Mill’s STEM-focused exhibits, too!) All young scientists are welcome to join Homeschool Days, including homeschoolers, homeschooling groups, learning pods, and students with asynchronous schedules. Homeschool Days will be held monthly from September 2024 to April 2025.*
*Except January 2025 for the mid-year break

 

September 11th - Out of this World! (Space)
Floor Activities
  • Straw Rockets
  • Guests will design, create, and test their straw rockets
  • DIY Spectroscope
  • Guests will create and take home spectroscopes that measure the spectrum of visible light
  • Orrery Kits
  • Guests will create a mechanical solar system model to take home

Learning Labs

  • Marsquake Madness

  • Students will work together to create a home or base on Mars that can withstand a marsquake!

  • Lunar Lava Landscapes

  • Students will create a model of Jupiter’s moon Io, and learn about its unique geographic properties

  • Cubesat Designs

  • Students will design and create model cubesats and learn how these tiny satellites are used for planetary research

STEM Scholar Hour

  • Visit with Jasmine Singh an incoming UTSA PhD. student studying planetary science and will be working with the Southwest Research Institute. Jasmine will share her STEM journey with students. Students will then learn how telescopes in space capture images using different wavelengths of light.
